Sergeant Musgrave's Dance: an Unhistorical Parable (1960)
John Arden
Four soldiers, carrying a heavy crate, arrive in a small town. It decides the questions for a distant war, but the local population judges that the military is at the service of the authorities to repress a strike. In fact, the soldiers are deserters and bring with them their dead book on the battlefield that they intend to use as a banner to protest the war. But the misunderstandings generated will subvert this project and its own rights to use a law that denounces. In the shadow going the rebels reduce-if-a dancing in desert and irrisory shade in the shadow of hanged that figures to his next order.
